IMPORTANT FACT
April 21, 1836 - General Sam Houston, Commander of the Texian Army, launched a surprise attack against General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Commander of the Mexican Army, at a place called San Jacinto (just east of modern day Houston). Santa Anna had not expected an attack until the next morning. The Texian Army of about 900 men marched across a grassy field to attack approximately 1200 Mexican soldiers. Over half of the Mexican soldiers were killed; only 9 Texians died. This battle was the last major battle of the Texas Revolution and confirmed Texas independence from Mexico.
